The following is a concise list of all of the World Chess Champions. When Kasparov departed from FIDE, a split was created of the champions; the classical world champion, this is one who defeated the past world champion in match play. The second is the FIDE world champion, a winner of the annual FIDE Chess Championship Tournament. The re-unification match took place on Friday, October, 13, 2006; Classical World Chess Champion Vladimir Kramnik defeated FIDE World Chess Champion Vesselin Topalov to be the unified "World Chess Champion."
